I'm kind of curious what everyone thinks and need your help. I received a gift card to Amazon from work for Christmas, and am contemplating many books. One that has come to my mind for quite a while is this one:
I was wondering how many of my fellow bloggers have read it, and would it be worth investing the time and money to give it a read? I have about five other baseball books that really caught my eye for an eventual read, but would really like to get some feedback from the blog world about some of the books you have read, or would like to sit down and read.
In the end, I hope that Christmas saw all of you receive all that you could have hoped for.
I got Mint Condition from my library and generally liked it, but not enough to buy it. Lots of interesting stuff about Jefferson Burdick and the history of the card companies, but I thought it was kind of preachy about how the hobby has changed from cheap cards for kids to major investments. Definitely check it out, though.
ReplyDeleteMint Condition is well worth it. I also have the Charlie O. book and the Big Hair / Plastic Grass. Read the Charlie O. book with Bruce Markenson's book on the Swingin' A's.
ReplyDeleteI loved Mint Condition! It's got alot of great card info and definitely worth it I felt.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading Big Hair and Plastic Grass right now. I like it because it gives a good overview (with a chapter on each season) of the 1970's - which admittedly I didn't know much about (I'm an 80's child). So it's been a learning kind of thing for me but I imagine if you lived through the 70's it would be a nice memory lane kind of book...full of fond rememberances.
ReplyDeleteAnd now that I know a bit more about Charlie Finley and those A's teams of the 70's, the book about him sounds very appealing. And No doubt the Vin Scully book would be interesting as well.
Next up for me is the new Mickey Mantle book.
I have not read any of these, but given the option, I'd get Mint Condition!
ReplyDeleteMint Condition was a good read, but for my money, I would not invest in it. Maybe check it out from a library and read it. However, the Hank Aaron book is a great read, and I would invest in that one. But in my opinion, you cannot go wrong with almost any book on baseball. I just got one called A Baseball Fan's Bucket List, and it is a great read so far, but I have not finished it. It is one of many books that I have stacked up and ready to read. Keep us posted on what you do decide to read. Maybe I will drop you an email with some baseball books that I found to be good reads.
ReplyDeleteGot a lot out of Mint Condition, especially the way it combines (or points to) the evolution of 20th century business. I'm a sucker for non-fiction that crosses the culture/economics/history boundary. :-)

ReplyDeleteAs a child of the 70's (late 70's, I'm not THAT old, lol), Big Hair and Plastic Grass intrests me. I haven't read Mint Condition yet, but it's on my Must read list along side the new George Steinbrenner book by Bill Madden.
ReplyDeleteI bought Mint Condition at the Borders by my work because it's closing (everything was 40% off). I haven't read it yet, though.
