The Haves and the Have Nots

I don't if anybody saw this coming down the pipeline today. We Mariners fans have wanted something exciting to happen to the Mariners roster all offseason. Today they made a big trade. I personally am not too impressed with the deal. The mighty Yankees have pulled down the Mariners pants in front of the whole school. Back in June of 2010, the Mariners and Yankees were working on a deal to send Cliff Lee to the Yankees for catching prospect Jesus Montero. The deal fell apart and Cliff went to Texas instead. Today the M's finally got Montero. They also acquired Hector Noesi.

In exchange for a right handed hitting catcher that can't catch, we give up a big horse in Michael Pineda. Also going to the Yankees is Jose Campos, who spent last season on A Everett.

While I know that everybody thinks that Jesus is next hot commotity, I don't know if I'm sold on him. I would assume that since he can DH and Justin Smoak can play 1B, that pretty much takes us out of any slight chance there was of getting Prince to come to Seattle. I  think we still need a lefty hitter, but I guess we will probably roll out another stinker this year. I'm starting to feel the pain of Royals and Pirates fans, every good kid gets dealt. I sure hope there is some more signings or deals to come before Spring Training.

  1. I feel bad for M's fans, Seattle definitely got a raw deal here. Montero can definitely hit, but so what? DHs don't exactly go for a premium these days, and you just gave an ultra-cheap stud pitcher under contract for quite a few years to the Yankees so they could spend their wad of cash on free agents. Unless Pineda comes down with career-ending arm trouble, I don't see any way Seattle comes out of this a winner. May the Yankees suffer another embarrassing year of not winning a title with the highest paid, most stocked roster....

  2. Felix will be a Dodger in 2013. Enjoy him and Ichiro now before they are gone. You also have a beautiful ballpark to watch games in. That is a plus.

  3. Yikes, bitter much? They hardly gave him to the Yankees. They are getting six controlled years of one of the top offensive prospects in the game. I'd hardly call that giving away.

Don't overlook Noesi, Larry. I hate losing him. He will step right into the rotation. A young nucleus of Smoak-Ackley-Montero is formiddable. Montero's power to right will play well at Safeco. I'm sad to lose him. Best of luck.

  4. It's tough to give up Pineda, no doubt. But I will say that Montero is going to mash. I saw him hit a couple of BOMBS during his call-up last year. Kid is going to hit & by the sounds of it, the M's have some great pitching coming up in the next year or so (Hultzen, Paxton, Walker etc).

  5. I'm not sure what to think of the trade. Pineda was a stud on the mound and I would have loved to see what he'd do this season as a Mariner. Getting a big bat was one of our needs and since our team is cheap as hell why not trade for him? Hopefully he does a good job at DH, you know since he's a catcher that can't catch.
