Just announced at 4:45 PDT by the Mariners, Ken Griffey Jr. has announced his retirement. I never have been a big Griffey fan in the first or second go-around with the team, but it's sad to see him go out this way. This year has been just dismal for him. It would have been nice to see him go out last year to the love and not all the scrutiny. He is sure to be a first ballot hall of famer. He will be the first player to go in wearing a Mariners hat. Good luck in your endeavors, Ken.
I've been listening to the story for the last couple of hours and it's really the end of an era.
ReplyDeleteBut this is the natural arc or a clean player. Players who play the game the right way just run out of gas - and that's what happened to Junior. No shame in that. In fact, if he came into the season and had 10 HR's going into June people would start to wonder.
I'm happy for him. I hope he stays in the organization in some capacity. But he was a thrill to watch. I followed his years in Cincy and his stint in Chicago. I'm glad he ended it with the Mariners. I wish him nothing but the best.
