A must for all of mankind

As we all know our friend, the great Fuji-San, is holding his annual contest. What card do you think is a must have? I came up with a couple. First off, I think you should own any card from my favorite set that I am blogging about:
Now you don't have to own Charlie's card here, but you have to have at least one from the 1979 Topps set. It is a classic, and my first set I ever saw. I'm also of the opinion that this is the greatest set ever made for a few colorful reasons. You had cards with black, blue, green, and red players names:

Another reason is the awesome team cards like this one:

I say go out and get yourself some 1979, and 1980 Topps cards today!!

Definitely not HOF'ers...

It is sad to say that probably is no one close to having even a sniff of the Hall of Fame in this Mariners lineup. These guys are more schizophrenic than Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. They have had a perfect game against them at home, scored 21 runs against the Rangers, just threw a no hitter at the Dodgers, and now this. That's right, they lost a Felix Hernandez start to the Padres, and get shut out last night for two losses in a row to a lowly team in the San Diego Padres (sorry Padres fans for the description).

I'm sure you see this and think this guy is a HOF'er, and he is. The reason why I took his picture is it is being used by our friend Matthew at Number 5 Type Collection. His blog has hit the 4 year mark and he is holding a contest. Click on the name of his blog to go there. While I admit I don't pimp too many contests because everybody does it and the blog world get overrun with pimp posts. I wanted to rant about the Mariners first anyways.

Also, for all of those who didn't stay up or were in bed out east, a big Congratulations to Matt Cain. Matt threw the first perfect game in Giants history last night. It was fun to flip back and forth to watch him pitch last night. It is a nice sight to see for the faithful that brave the weather at AT&T Park. Way to go to Matt Cain and the Giants!

The King's Crown Jewels

Not too long ago, our friend Kevin at The Diamond King had a little contest. I shouldn't call it little when there were many chances to win. I decided to get in on a second entry and won that day's loot. I went for it because it had two cards I thought would be hardest to ever get to finish off my Mariners collection. The two biggest Mariner RC's:

I guess I won't have to pay some LCS top dollar for those cards to go in the binder. Also in the winnings was a 1981 Topps Nolan Ryan in all his Astros orange glory. The fourth card might be desired by some fans of the HOF'er or just Cubs fans in general. I would be open to trading Ryne for some Mariners I need if you got them.

Big thanks again to Kevin for his great contest, and for getting them up the I-5 corridor in time for Christmas.

The King is leaving

Today at 10 AM PT, that's 1 PM to all you wrong coasters. The Diamond King has been having a great little contest. He closes it today, but go look and see if you want to put in to win some great cards. If you win one of these packages you will be dancing on your toes like the King!

Something old, something new

During the Easter holiday, Matthew over at Number 5 Type Collection held a little contest. All you had to do was pick a number. I picked #105 and what was closest to my number was 110. the #110 netted me this card in the contest:

A 1971 of Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski. While Maz is most well known for this in 1960:

Bill was also a third base coach in Seattle. Maz was brought into the Mariners family in 1979 by manager Darrell Johnson.

When Johnson was fired in 1980, Maury Wills took over and kept Bill on his staff. After the 1980 season Bill left the Mariners.

Also, Matthew sent an extra card of a future HOF'er, I'm sure you've heard of him. Here's a beauty from his second year of cards:

That's right folks, #'d 16/100. I'm not big on #'d cards and all the limited stuff. I'm more of a regular old base card kind of guy. It is a nice card to have though, and I have some thoughts of what I might do with it.

Thanks again to Matt for the great contest.

Also, thanks to the Mariners for the exciting walk-off win, and to White Sox Cards for his season long homemade cards and this beauty from last night's game:
I love the old trident M in the star. I wish they would go back to those uniforms full time.

A Topps 60 you'll want

As we all know Topps is celebrating their 60th year. Blah, blah, blah. One of our great fellow bloggers is making up his own Topps 60. It will come in the form of a contest. Ted the great writer of Crinkly Wrappers want you to leave him a comment and follow his blog. If you don't, you should, he's good at what he does. Plus I have love for him because his Blue Jays came in the same year as my Mariners. His set that he is giving away is one card from every year of Topps. How awesome is it to know you will own a real life '52 Topps? Go here now, sign up and hope the Great Randomnator picks you. I hope it's me instead.

A little old school Jays love for Ted---

Welcome home Bob!!

Recently Chris at Vintage Sportscards held a contest for getting his 50th follower. I was one of the lucky winners. I said I would win this card, and look who showed up in the mail yesterday.

I have wanted this card for a long time. It is sad that it came out after Roberto's death, but it shows him with the great mark of 3,000 hits.

I could care less of it's condition, it is a 1973 Roberto Clemente, Hall of Famer! I had liked Roberto as a player from films I've seen, but after reading this book about him a few years ago I had a new found respect for him.

Roberto was a part of two World Champion teams in 1960, and again in 1971.

Speaking of World Champion Pirates, we need to say goodbye to the leader of my first favorite team, the 1979 Pirates. Former manager Chuck Tanner passed away yesterday at the age of 82.

Chuck played from 1955 to 1962 with the Braves, Cubs, Indians, and Angels. He was a manager for the White Sox, Athletics, Pirates, and Braves. Rest in Peace Chuck.

Chris was also great enough to send me this great 1982 Donruss of Tommy Davis, some '86 Donruss cards, a couple '82 Fleer's to finish that set off, and a couple '83 Fleer's to help that one out too. Every few cards continue to help dwindle the number down. Can you help out with the Super Set too?

Thanks again to Chris for holding the contest, and sending me probably the greatest 1973 card Topps made that year!

Woo Hoo Look at me!!

Not too long ago while doing the Finest Fleer reviews, I got a comment from Nick saying he had this 2007 Fleer card I needed.

Guess what showed up in the mail today? that's right the Travis Chick card I needed. Also in there were some other nice Mariners goodies including this beauty:

While I'm not a big relic, auto or fancy stuff kind of guy, this thing is sweet! That would be the All-Star Game that Ichiro hit an inside the park home run and won the MVP. Definitely a keeper! Thanks to Nick at For Cards Sake for sending me over the great cards, and I hope you enjoy the little bit I sent you.

Also of good news, was getting the news that thanks to the great randomizer, I did win this 1973 Topps Roberto Clemente card I coveted from Vintage Sportscards' Contest.

I don't know if it was a premonition that I would win, or just dumb luck. I can't to get my hands on this card in the mail. I have wanted one for many years due to the historic nature of it, but didn't want to pay the prices I saw for it. Thanks again to Chris for holding the contest, and I will make sure that Roberto is given his proper place in my collection.

History lesson

If you would like to know a little more about the history of baseball, and one of it's most important players, you need to go here. Chris the proprietor of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz is giving this book away in his contest.

This book will be a very good history lesson into the economics of baseball as it is today. Curt led the fight to get baseball to let the players have the ability to move teams nowadays with free agency. Head over to Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz to enter the contest. While you are there give a look to all the cool Braves stuff that he has.

A dimwit is a good thing...

I recently entered a contest over at The Daily Dimwit where he opened a bunch of blasters of cards. The idea of the contest was watch the video, pick 5 cards you like, and if the great randomizer draws your name, you win. I watched and only saw five total Mariner cards, now we all know what five cards I was picking, right? Now, because it was near Christmas, and Samuel was in a giving mood, all commenters were winners. Well, looky what came in the mail yesterday:

Three cards of '09 SPx with Ichiro, Felix, and some guy named Griffey(?). Also there was a '07 Bowman Heritage of Felix(nice looking card), and an '06 UD Mike Morse. The Morse card was needed for the Super Set, so scratch one more card off the never ending list. Big thanks again to the generosity of Samuel. Give The Daily Dimwit a read, and help out an Astros fan with some cards if you can.

WINNER! WINNER!

I want to say thank you to Play at the Plate. He recently held a contest, and all you had to do was correctly guess the winner of the World Series. I hated to pick the Giants on a Rangers fan's blog, but my gut told me to. Thanks the wonderful randomizer, I was chosen from the people that picked San Fran. I'm excited for any prize, but more excited for his end of the year contest. If you would like to get in on the action, he just put up his November contest. Head over now, and tell him I sent you. Good luck.
